Focus Session: Culinary Fluid Dynamics
Session G32
3:00 pm – 4:05 pm
Room: 158AB
- Organizer: Arnold Mathijssen, University of Pennsylvania
Since ancient history, scientific innovations have refined our food. Moreover, numerous breakthroughs in physics and engineering were inspired by creativity in the kitchen. This connection became clear again during the COVID-19 pandemic when access to laboratories was restricted, but scientists continued researching at home. A series of papers with discoveries that emerged will be highlighted in this focus session at the APS DFD meeting involving the local culinary community in Washington, DC.
Speakers
- Endre Joachim Mossige, University of Oslo
- Alvaro Marin, Physics of Fluids, University of Twente
- Mai Hirakawa, Kyushu University
- Carsen H Grote, University of Wisconsin – Madison
Fluids Next: Fluid Dynamics of Injury
Session J46
4:35 pm – 6:06 pm
Room: 209 BC
- Organizers: Anne Staples, Virginia Tech; Qianhong Wu, Villanova University
This Focus Session brings together established and early career researchers to exchange ideas and brainstorm future directions in the emerging field of fluid-mediated injury research. More broadly, this session may inspire fluid dynamics researchers working on fluid-elastic and fluid-tissue coupling, thin film dynamics, high-speed and in vivo experimental fluid mechanics techniques, impact fluid dynamics, and more.
Speakers
- Douglas H Kelley, University of Rochester
- Ji Lang, Southeast University
- Christina L Hamlet, Bucknell University
- Claus-Dieter Ohl, University of Magdeburg
- Caroline Cohen, École Polytechnique
- Qianhong Wu, Villanova University
